For the past 20 years, IFAD has been developing sustainable artisanal fisheries along the coast of Mozambique, with a particular focus on establishing women-owned businesses.

IFAD IS WORKING TO CHANGE THAT. OVER HALF OF ALL IFAD PROJECT PARTICIPANTS ARE WOMEN.

Mariamo was one of over 28O,OOO participants in the ProPESCA project. She acquired all the knowledge she needed to start her fishing business, from processing and marketing fish, to food hygiene and nutrition, to financial literacy.

After the project finished, the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically slowed down Zalala’s economy.
